An introduction to Phase-based Minimalist Grammars: why move is Top-Down from Left-to-Right

چکیده

This paper is an introduction to a grammatical formalism (Phase-based Minimalist Grammar, elaboration of Stabler’s 1997 Minimalist Grammar) that includes a revised version of the standard minimalist structure building operations merge, move and the notion of derivation by phase (Chomsky 1999-2005). The main difference with respect to the standard theory is that these devices strictly operate TopDown and from Left-to-Right. In these pages I will argue that long distance dependencies, such as successive cyclic A'-movement, are better understood within this unconventional (at least within the Minimalist Program) phase-based directional perspective.

A probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars

This paper describes a probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars. Top-down parsers have the great advantage of having a certain predictive power during the parsing, which takes place in a left-to-right reading of the sentence. Such parsers have already been well-implemented and studied in the case of Context-Free Grammars (see for example [Roa01]), which are already top-down, but th...

Alternating Regular Tree Grammars in the Framework of Lattice-Valued Logic

In this paper, two different ways of introducing alternation for lattice-valued (referred to as {L}valued)  regular tree grammars and {L}valued top-down tree automata are compared. One is the way which defines the alternating regular tree grammar, i.e., alternation is governed by the non-terminals of the grammar and the other is the way which combines state with alternation. The first way is ta...

Locality and the Complexity of Minimalist Derivation Tree Languages

Minimalist grammars provide a formalization of Minimalist syntax which allows us to study how the components of said theory affect its expressivity. A central concern of Minimalist syntax is the locality of the displacement operation Move. In Minimalist grammars, however, Move is unbounded. This paper is a study of the repercussions of limiting movement with respect to the number of slices a mo...

A Refined Notion of Memory Usage for Minimalist Parsing

Recently there has been a lot of interest in testing the processing predictions of a specific top-down parser for Minimalist grammars (Stabler, 2013). Most of this work relies on memory-based difficulty metrics that relate the shape of the parse tree to processing behavior. We show that none of the difficulty metrics proposed so far can explain why subject relative clauses are more easily proce...

On directionality of phrase structure building.

Minimalism in grammatical theorizing (Chomsky in The minimalist program. MIT Press, Cambridge, 1995) led to simpler linguistic devices and a better focalization of the core properties of the structure building engine: a lexicon and a free (recursive) phrase formation operation, dubbed Merge, are the basic components that serve in building syntactic structures. Here I suggest that by looking at ...
